For example, IBM has created a system that can “read” and “decode” its target’s facial expressions, mimicking them in real-time. It is the strongest AI to date, but it’s still just a computer following an algorithm.
Earlier, robots were cool and were used to fix things. The first robots were just mechanical devices with human-like movements, but devices got better, and they became smarter. It’s only been years since we started seeing them in movies and our daily lives, but it’s now closer than ever for us to see robots that mimic human movements. I’m lucky enough to have a coworker who spends her days by coding. She gets to work with robots almost every morning and is fascinated by them. She tells me that the robots at her workplace can lift heavy boxes, transport, and place them exactly where they need to be. She also talks about the ones that help process packages, how they help speed up assembly lines, and even help share the burden of heavy lifting.
When we talk about robots, we tend to envision humanoid machines like humans. These machines can perform complicated tasks, such as picking up objects and manipulating them—and even talk sometimes. But some robots are much closer to us than they seem: drones. Despite their small size, they can do a wide range of tasks: pull military supplies, monitor the environment, or even assist in search and rescue operations.

Robots have been showing up in our real world for decades now, and while some of us are used to seeing robots in science fiction movies and tv shows, most of us are blissfully unaware of just how many types of robots are out there. From droids and drones to industrial robots and service robots, each of these types is unique and important to the future of our world.
